Simpler is Better!
Written by Gayle
I love to throw open my windows and let in the fresh Spring air! It always reminds me of the Spring Cleaning ritual of my childhood. We don’t make such a production of it these days, but there is nothing like having a clean house or room or desk to make me feel lighter and more accomplished!
But I don’t like all of the chemicals that are packed into most commercial cleaners. Our society has complicated things that don’t need complicating! Here are three simple recipes for DIY cleaners!
Citrus All-Purpose Cleaner
- Place orange and/or lemon peels in a glass jar
- Cover with vinegar
- Let sit about 2 weeks
- Strain
- Dilute 1:1 with water in a spray bottle
- Use for cleaning floors, sinks, walls, etc. Do not use on marble or granite, since the vinegar can etch the stone. (I do use it on my slate, however, with the OK from my floor guy.)
Citrus De-greaser
- 2 TBSP baking soda
- 2 tsp castile soap (Dr. Bronners is great!)
- 20 drops of lemon essential oil
- 2 cups warm water
Mix all of the ingredients together and pour into a spray bottle. This cleaner is great for the stove and other surfaces that may get greasy.
Lemon Dusting Cloths
Did you think you could ever replace the furniture spray? I hate that stuff, but dry cloths don’t really pick up the dust, they just move it around. I was thrilled to find this DIY!
- Water
- Vinegar
- Olive Oil
- Rags–you can use old washcloths or even cut up old t-shirts!
- Lemon peels
- Glass jar with a tight lid.
Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a glass pie pan
Add about 1 tsp olive oil
Soak rags in the mixture until fully saturated
Wring out the cloths
Lay some lemon peels on the cloths and roll them up, and then put them in the glass jar.
Add some more lemon peels, and then cover tightly with the lid.
Store until needed.
After you use these cloths, wash them as you would any cloths, and then repeat!
Happy Natural Spring Cleaning!
