It’s a Green Month–Let’s Get Green With An Up-cyle DIY!

I’m always looking for ways to use old t-shirts. We have so many from all of the sports, events, teams and souvenirs over the years. So when I saw this idea, I jumped at the chance to give it a try.
Cut out a bag shape from your old t-shirt. I kept the hem on mine–it will be the top of the bag, where the handle is cut.
There’s not a real trick here–just cut the size you want. Remember that the bag will stretch lengthwise, so it’s ok to make it shorter rather than longer.
Then put the right sides together and sew all along the raw edge. I used a zig-zag stitch that catches the raw edges, so the seam is very small, and I didn’t try to finish it more than that. (It’s just the inside of that bag anyway, so it doesn’t have to look pretty.)
Turn the bag right side out, and then lay flat on the table. Mark where you want to cut the slits. I made my lines about 1/2 inch apart, and the cuts about 1 1/2 inches long. You can see they stagger and overlap a little. Start about 3-4 inches below the top of the bag (the hemmed edge here) to allow for a handle. Cut through both layers of fabric. I did not cut through my side seam at all.
I used my scissors that have a spring in them to help ease the strain for some of this, and then I used my rotary cutter, which was a lot easier and a lot less strain. But you have to be careful to not make the slits too long. I didn’t get a picture of it, but I cut a longer slit in the center top for the handle. I cut mine about 5 inches long. If you want to carry your bag over your shoulder you’ll want a larger opening.
Then s-t-r-e-t-c-h out the bag! I was not too happy with the looks of my slits, but once I stretched it out it didn’t matter at all!
These bags are great for larger fruits and vegetables so I won’t have to use so much plastic! These bags can be washed just like a t-shirt and can be used for years.
Think of all of the ways you can use these bags! Take them to the beach or park with sand toys — Or as a bag for sandals or an extra towel.
Let’s all try to get a little greener!
